LOCATION

The Burnt Dirt residency program is located in the scenic region of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, and offers artists a coastal escape only one hour drive from Sydney.

Resident artist’s will have full access to Clay Wollongong’s ceramic studio in the heart of Wollongong CBD.

THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Founded by artists for artists, the Burnt Dirt residency is a unique collaborative program that offers emerging and established artists the opportunity to explore and expand their practice in object and ceramic art.

Situated in the creative atmosphere of the Clay Wollongong ceramic studio, the four-week residency provides artists the time and space to both develop their own personal practice and projects, as well as contribute to the development of new object art collections through collaboration with the Burnt Dirt team.

This unique collaborative experience seeks to expand the boundaries of ceramic and object art, as well as contribute to the growth of a more vibrant, thriving, engaged art community.

While funding limitations in 2026 mean we can’t currently offer accommodation for visiting artists, we’re working hard on fundraising to bring this support back soon. We continue to welcome applications from local artists or those who can find their own accomodation. Residents will have shared access to a private studio space at Clay Wollongong.

For more information about the program, please read through our FAQs.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The Burnt Dirt four-week residency program invites applications from local and Australia-wide artists of all skills levels, including emerging and established artists.

As the residency has a focus on ceramic and object art, it is expected that applicants have either experience or a clear interest in working with this medium.
